To mark the IMO Day of the Seafarer on the 25th June, International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare (ICSW) has announced that nominations for the 2011 International Seafarers' Welfare Awards are open. Now in their second year, the ICSW International  Seafarers' Welfare Awards recognise companies, ports, welfare organisations and individuals who provide excellent welfare facilities and services to seafarers on land or at sea.

The awards will be judged by leading figures in the industry and presented at a high profile awards ceremony at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva on the opening night of the Maritime Labour Convention tripartite meeting on 12 December 2011.

There are four award categories - Seafarer Centre of the Year, Port Of The Year, Shipping Company of the Year and Welfare Personality of the Year. The first three categories will be nominated directly by seafarers. After receiving a nomination shipping companies, ports and seafarer centres will be invited to complete a full awards submission to take them through to the judging stage. The award for welfare personality of the year can be self-nominated or nominated by seafarers' organisations or individuals involved with seafarers' welfare.

Copies of the poster & leaflet promoting the awards can be downloaded from the website. Seafarers can nominate at or by post and email. Forms for the full submissions are also available online. The deadline for nominations is 9 September and full submissions from nominees must be received by 23 September. Judging will take place in October and the winners will be notified by early November 2011.

This year V Ships are sponsoring the awards event. InterManager sponsors the Shipping Company of the Year award, International Shipping Federation sponsors the Seafarer Centre of the Year award and Teekay Shipping sponsors the Port of the Year award. The awards have been generously funded by the ITF Seafarers' Trust. They are also supported by the International Maritime Organisation, International Labour Organisation, along with the International Shipping Federation, the International Transport Workers' Federation and the International Christian Maritime Association.
